Historical context includes centuries of intermingled communities in cities and rural areas across what is now Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Nagorno-Karabakh. In the late 20th century, rising nationalist movements and competing territorial claims led to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, followed by a 1994 ceasefire.
