This action helps to bring the prices back into alignment, a process that is fundamental to efficient market theory.

There are several types of arbitrage. Pure arbitrage involves risk-free profit, which is rare in modern financial markets due to the speed of information dissemination and automated trading systems. Statistical arbitrage, on the other hand, relies on statistical models and historical data to identify temporary price discrepancies that are likely to correct themselves. This type of arbitrage carries a higher degree of risk as the predicted price movements may not occur.

Other forms include merger arbitrage, which capitalizes on the price difference between a target company's stock price and the price offered by an acquiring company during a merger or acquisition. Convertible arbitrage involves taking a long position in a convertible bond and a short position in the underlying stock. Retail arbitrage, typically seen in e-commerce, involves buying products at a low price from one retailer and selling them at a higher price on another platform.

Arbitrage opportunities are typically short-lived and often require sophisticated technology and quick execution to capture. Large institutional investors and hedge funds are the primary participants in most financial arbitrage strategies due to the capital and technological resources required.
