Apoproteins
An apoprotein is the protein component of a conjugated protein that lacks its non-protein cofactor or prosthetic group. The apoprotein can exist in an inactive form and, upon binding the prosthetic group, becomes a holoprotein or holoenzyme. This distinction helps explain how many enzymes and structural proteins acquire activity through association with non-protein partners.
In enzymology, the term apoenzyme refers to the protein portion of an enzyme; the catalytically active form
In lipid transport and metabolism, apolipoproteins are the protein components of lipoproteins, serving roles in particle
Clinical and research relevance: defects or deficiencies in apoproteins or their assembly can contribute to metabolic
