Antithetische

Antithetische is the adjective form of the German term antithetisch, meaning antithetical or characterized by opposition. In rhetoric and literary analysis, it describes a style, argument, or passage that juxtaposes contrasting ideas to make the difference more salient.

Etymology: The word derives from Greek anti-, “against,” and thesis, “placing,” via Latin. In German, the noun form for the figure is Antithese (antithesis); antithetisch describes the quality or technique.

Usage: Antithetische elements present opposing ideas, values, or images in close proximity, often in parallel clauses or phrases. They are common in poetry, sermons, political speeches, and philosophical prose. The device emphasizes contrast and balance rather than self-contradiction; it is related to, but distinct from, paradox or mere negation.

Examples: A text may be described as antithetisch when it places light and darkness, freedom and oppression, or order and chaos in juxtaposition within a single sentence or passage.
