AntigenMediated refers to processes or phenomena that are triggered or regulated by antigens. Antigens are molecules, typically proteins or polysaccharides, that can elicit an immune response, particularly the production of antibodies. In the context of immunology, an antigenMediated process involves the recognition of an antigen by specific components of the immune system, such as lymphocytes or antibodies.

One common antigenMediated process is the adaptive immune response. When a foreign antigen enters the body, it is recognized by T cells or B cells. This recognition initiates a cascade of events, leading to the proliferation of antigen-specific lymphocytes and the production of antibodies or cytotoxic T cells. This response is designed to eliminate the antigen and any infected or abnormal cells.

Another example is antigen presentation, a crucial step in initiating T cell responses. Antigen-presenting cells (APCs) like macrophages and dendritic cells engulf pathogens or foreign substances, process their antigens, and then display fragments of these antigens on their surface, bound to MHC molecules. This display allows T helper cells to recognize the antigenMediated presentation, thereby activating the adaptive immune system.

AntigenMediated also plays a role in diagnostic tests, such as ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) or lateral flow assays. These tests detect the presence or quantity of specific antigens or antibodies in a sample, utilizing the specific binding interactions that define an antigenMediated reaction. The specificity of these reactions allows for the identification of infections, diseases, or the presence of certain substances.
