Antifriisi

Antifriisi, also known as coolant or antifreeze, is a fluid added to a vehicle's cooling system to prevent it from freezing in cold temperatures and boiling in hot temperatures. Its primary function is to maintain the engine's operating temperature within a safe range, which is crucial for optimal performance and longevity.

The main component of most antifriisi is ethylene glycol or propylene glycol. These glycols have a lower freezing point and a higher boiling point than water. When mixed with water, typically in a 50/50 ratio, antifriisi significantly expands the temperature range over which the coolant remains liquid. This prevents the water in the cooling system from freezing and expanding, which could damage engine components like the radiator and engine block. It also prevents the coolant from boiling over during hot weather or under heavy engine load, which can lead to overheating.

In addition to its temperature regulation properties, antifriisi also contains additives that protect the cooling system from corrosion and rust. These inhibitors form a protective layer on metal surfaces, preventing the acidic properties of the coolant from degrading the components. Over time, the effectiveness of these additives diminishes, and it is recommended to change the antifriisi according to the vehicle manufacturer's specifications. Proper maintenance of the cooling system with the correct type and concentration of antifriisi is essential for preventing engine damage and ensuring reliable operation.
