Antibiotikamotståndet, also known as antibiotic resistance, is a growing global health concern. It refers to the ability of bacteria and other microorganisms to withstand the effects of an antibiotic drug. This resistance occurs when bacteria evolve in ways that make them immune to antibiotics, rendering the medications ineffective.

The primary driver of antibiotic resistance is the overuse and misuse of antibiotics. When antibiotics are used unnecessarily, such as for viral infections for which they have no effect, or when patients do not complete their prescribed course of treatment, bacteria are exposed to the drug without being fully eradicated. This allows surviving bacteria to develop resistance mechanisms and multiply. Antibiotic resistance poses a serious threat because it makes common infections much harder to treat. This can lead to longer illnesses, increased mortality rates, and higher healthcare costs. Infections that were once easily managed with antibiotics may become untreatable, leading to prolonged hospital stays and the need for more toxic and expensive alternative treatments.

Preventing the spread of antibiotic resistance involves several strategies. These include promoting responsible antibiotic use in both human and animal medicine, developing new antibiotics and alternative treatments, and implementing strict infection control measures in healthcare settings and the community. Public awareness campaigns are also crucial to educate individuals about the importance of using antibiotics only when prescribed by a healthcare professional and completing the full course of treatment.
