Ansiktsbenene

Ansiktsbenene, also known as the facial bones, form the structure of the face. This complex framework is composed of fourteen individual bones, which together create the orbits for the eyes, the nasal cavity, and the oral cavity. These bones are crucial for protection, support, and facial expression.

The largest of the facial bones is the mandible, or lower jawbone, which is the only movable bone in the skull. Paired bones include the maxilla (upper jaw), zygomatic bones (cheekbones), palatine bones (forming the posterior part of the hard palate), lacrimal bones (located in the medial wall of the orbits), nasal bones (forming the bridge of the nose), and inferior nasal conchae (located within the nasal cavity). The unpaired vomer forms the inferior and posterior part of the nasal septum.

These bones articulate with each other and with the cranial bones to form a stable and functional unit. The intricate arrangement of the facial bones allows for chewing, speaking, breathing through the nose, and the complex movements of the facial muscles that facilitate communication and emotion. Their precise formation is essential for sight, smell, and taste, and they provide a protective shield for vital sensory organs.
