Angioödemets

Angioödemets is a rare medical condition characterized by sudden, severe swelling that affects the deeper layers of the skin and mucous membranes. This swelling typically occurs in the face, lips, tongue, throat, hands, and feet. While it can be alarming, angioödemets is not contagious.

The underlying cause of angioödemets is a rapid release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators. These substances cause blood vessels to leak fluid, leading to the characteristic swelling. There are several types of angioödemets, including hereditary angioödemets (HAE) and acquired angioödemets (AAE). HAE is a genetic disorder that affects the body's ability to regulate a protein called C1 inhibitor, which is crucial in controlling inflammation. AAE can be caused by certain medications, autoimmune diseases, or certain types of cancer. Allergic reactions are another common trigger, particularly to foods, insect bites, or certain medications like ACE inhibitors.

Symptoms can vary in severity and duration, ranging from mild discomfort to life-threatening airway obstruction if the throat is affected. Diagnosis involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and sometimes blood tests to assess levels of C1 inhibitor or other related substances. Treatment depends on the cause and severity. For allergic angioödemets, antihistamines and corticosteroids may be prescribed. In cases of HAE or AAE, specific treatments aimed at replacing or modulating C1 inhibitor are available. Prompt medical attention is crucial, especially if swelling affects breathing.
