Anfiarthroses

Anfiarthroses are a type of cartilaginous joint characterized by limited movement. They are distinguished from synarthroses, which are immovable joints, and diarthroses, which are freely movable joints. The bones in an anfiarthrosis are united by fibrocartilage or hyaline cartilage. This cartilaginous connection allows for a degree of flexibility and shock absorption, but restricts the range of motion. Examples of anfiarthroses include the joints between the vertebral bodies of the spine, where intervertebral discs provide cushioning and allow for slight bending, and the pubic symphysis, which connects the two pubic bones in the pelvis. These joints are crucial for maintaining structural integrity and enabling certain types of locomotion and posture. The limited mobility of anfiarthroses is a trade-off for increased stability and the ability to withstand significant forces. While not as mobile as synovial joints, their ability to permit some motion is vital for their function within the skeletal system.
