Ammooniumiühenditel

Ammooniumiühenditel is the Estonian term for ammonium compounds. These are chemical compounds that contain the ammonium ion, which has the chemical formula NH4+. The ammonium ion is formed when ammonia (NH3) accepts a proton (H+). Ammonium compounds are ionic and consist of the ammonium cation (NH4+) and an anion.

Common ammonium compounds include ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3), which is used as a fertilizer and an explosive, and ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), also known as sal ammoniac, which finds applications in soldering fluxes, dry cell batteries, and as a component in cough medicines. Ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4) is another important fertilizer, providing both nitrogen and sulfur to plants. Ammonium bicarbonate (NH4HCO3) is used as a leavening agent in baking.

Industrially, they are used in the production of explosives, dyes, pharmaceuticals, and refrigerants. The behavior of ammonium compounds in solution can vary depending on the accompanying anion, but they are generally soluble in water. Decomposition of ammonium compounds upon heating can release ammonia gas.
