Alveolarblöðrum

Alveolarblöðrum refers to the microscopic air sacs in the lungs where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place. These tiny, thin-walled structures are the primary functional units of the respiratory system. Each lung contains millions of these alveoli, clustered together like bunches of grapes. The walls of the alveoli are incredibly thin, typically only one cell thick, which facilitates the rapid diffusion of gases between the air within the alveoli and the blood in the surrounding capillaries.

The surface area provided by the vast number of alveoli is immense, allowing for efficient uptake of oxygen into the bloodstream and removal of carbon dioxide from it. This process is crucial for cellular respiration and the overall functioning of the body. The inner surface of the alveoli is coated with a thin layer of fluid that contains surfactant, a substance that reduces surface tension and prevents the alveoli from collapsing during exhalation.

Inflammation, fluid buildup, or damage to the alveolar walls can lead to shortness of breath and other respiratory difficulties.
