Alltagsmasken

Alltagsmasken, also known as face masks or community masks, are coverings worn over the nose and mouth. They became widely adopted in many parts of the world during the COVID-19 pandemic as a measure to reduce the transmission of respiratory droplets. The primary purpose of an Alltagsmaske is to act as a barrier, preventing an infected person from expelling virus-containing particles into the air and, to a lesser extent, offering some protection to the wearer from inhaling such particles.

These masks are typically made from various materials, including cloth, non-woven fabrics, or a combination of both. Unlike medical-grade masks such as surgical masks or N95 respirators, Alltagsmasken are generally not subject to the same stringent testing and regulatory standards. Their effectiveness can vary significantly depending on the material, the number of layers, and how well they fit the wearer's face. Proper usage, including frequent washing of reusable masks and correct application and removal, is crucial for their potential benefit. While their efficacy in preventing the spread of respiratory viruses has been a subject of ongoing research and public discussion, they have been integrated into public health strategies in many regions.
