Allexiviruses

Allexiviruses are a genus of viruses in the order Mononegavirales and the family Rhabdoviridae. They are known to infect arthropods, particularly insects. The name "allexivirus" is derived from the Greek word "allēlos," meaning "other," and "virus," referring to their insect hosts.

These viruses possess a single-stranded, negative-sense RNA genome. Their virions are typically bullet-shaped or pleomorphic, characteristic of the Rhabdoviridae family. Replication occurs in the cytoplasm of infected host cells. Allexiviruses are transmitted horizontally among their insect hosts, often through feeding or contact.

While allexiviruses are primarily associated with insects, some species have been studied for their potential impact on agricultural pests. Research into their biology and interactions with host organisms is ongoing, contributing to our understanding of viral diversity and evolution within insect populations. Their ecological role and potential for use as biocontrol agents are areas of interest for entomologists and virologists.
