Alküülimine is a chemical reaction in which an alkyl group is transferred from one molecule to another. This process is fundamental in organic chemistry and plays a significant role in various industrial applications, particularly in the petrochemical industry. An alkyl group is a functional group derived from an alkane by removal of one hydrogen atom. Common alkyl groups include methyl (CH3-), ethyl (C2H5-), and propyl (C3H7-).

For example, isobutane is alkylated with butenes to produce high-octane branched alkanes, which are then blended into gasoline to improve its antiknock properties. This process, known as catalytic alkylation, is crucial for meeting fuel quality standards.

Beyond fuels, alkylation is used in the synthesis of a wide range of chemicals, including pharmaceuticals, detergents, and plastics. It allows for the modification of molecular structures, leading to compounds with desired properties. The precise control of alkylation reactions is essential for achieving specific product outcomes and minimizing unwanted byproducts.
