Alkuperäissolu, also known as a primordial germ cell (PGC), is a type of cell that develops in the early embryo and ultimately gives rise to gametes, which are sperm in males and eggs in females. These cells are crucial for sexual reproduction.

PGCs originate in the epiblast, a layer of cells in the early embryo, and then migrate to the developing gonads, the future testes or ovaries. During their migration, they are distinct from other somatic cells and possess unique characteristics. Once they reach the gonads, they undergo further proliferation and differentiation.

In males, PGCs develop into spermatogonia, which continuously divide and mature into sperm. In females, PGCs develop into oogonia, which undergo a limited number of divisions and then enter meiosis to become oocytes, the precursor to eggs.

The process of PGC development and migration is highly conserved across many species, highlighting its fundamental importance in the continuation of life. Disruptions in PGC formation or migration can lead to infertility or developmental abnormalities. The study of PGCs is vital for understanding early embryonic development, germ cell biology, and the origins of reproductive health.
