Algalbased refers to products, processes, or materials derived from or utilizing algae. In the context of biofuels, algalbased fuels are produced from algae that can be converted into biodiesel, bioethanol, biogas, or bio-jet fuel. These fuels are considered a renewable alternative to fossil fuels, with algae offering a potentially higher yield per unit area compared to terrestrial energy crops.

Algalbased materials encompass a wide range of applications. This includes bioplastics made from algal biomass, which can offer a biodegradable alternative to conventional petroleum-based plastics. Algae are also used in the production of natural colorants, thickeners, and emulsifiers for the food and cosmetic industries. Furthermore, algalbased fertilizers and soil conditioners are being developed to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability.

The cultivation of algae for these purposes, known as algal farming or algal cultivation, can occur in various settings, including open ponds and closed photobioreactors. Research and development in the algalbased sector are ongoing, focusing on improving cultivation efficiency, optimizing biomass processing, and reducing production costs to make these sustainable alternatives more economically viable and widespread.
