Aldoolkondenseerimiseks is the Estonian term for aldol condensation. It is a fundamental organic chemical reaction where an enol or enolate ion reacts with a carbonyl compound, typically an aldehyde or a ketone. This reaction involves the formation of a new carbon-carbon bond. The initial product is a beta-hydroxy aldehyde or ketone, which often undergoes a subsequent dehydration step to form an alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehyde or ketone.

The reaction can be catalyzed by either acids or bases. Base-catalyzed aldol condensation proceeds via the formation of an enolate ion. The base abstracts an alpha-hydrogen atom from the carbonyl compound, generating a resonance-stabilized enolate. This enolate then acts as a nucleophile and attacks the electrophilic carbonyl carbon of another molecule of the aldehyde or ketone. In acid-catalyzed aldol condensation, the carbonyl oxygen is protonated, increasing the electrophilicity of the carbonyl carbon. An enol form of another molecule then acts as the nucleophile.

The aldol condensation is a versatile reaction used in the synthesis of a wide range of organic compounds, including pharmaceuticals, fragrances, and polymers. It is also a key step in many natural product syntheses. The term "aldol" itself is derived from "aldehyde" and "alcohol," reflecting the structure of the initial beta-hydroxy carbonyl product. The subsequent dehydration step leads to a conjugated system, which can have distinct chemical and physical properties. Variations of the aldol condensation, such as the Claisen condensation and Michael addition, also play significant roles in organic synthesis.
