Albuen

Albuen is the term used in Norwegian to denote the elbow, the joint that connects the upper arm to the forearm. In anatomical usage, albuen refers to the elbow as both a hinge joint and a complex region that enables a range of arm movements.

Anatomy: The elbow comprises three joints formed by the humerus, radius, and ulna: the humeroulnar, humeroradial, and proximal radioulnar joints. Stability comes from ligaments such as the ulnar collateral ligament, radial collateral ligament, and the annular ligament. The primary muscles crossing the joint include the biceps brachii, brachialis, brachioradialis, and triceps brachii, with innervation supplied by the median, radial, and ulnar nerves.

Movement: The elbow mainly performs flexion and extension, with forearm rotation (pronation and supination) enabled by the radioulnar joints and associated musculature. Range of motion varies among individuals but is sufficient for most daily tasks and activities requiring arm articulation.

Clinical notes: Common conditions affecting the albuen include tendinopathies known as tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis), elbow dislocations, radial head fractures, and osteoarthritis. Diagnostic approaches combine physical examination with imaging as needed. Treatment ranges from rest and physical therapy to immobilization, bracing, and, in some cases, surgery. Rehabilitation and proper mechanics are important factors in recovery and prevention of recurrence.
