The word is said to derive from two Arinari roots, alak meaning “presence” and jukat meaning “duty.” In the Arinari system, the alakjukat is a rotating office held by a member of a lineage regarded as custodians of communal memory. The role combines adjudicative functions, ritual leadership, and the coordination of collective labor during planting and harvest seasons.

Practically, an alakjukat oversees dispute mediation, maintains genealogical records, and arranges ceremonial gatherings that mark seasonal transitions. Elections or rotations depend on lineage seniority and recent acts of service rather than wealth or birth alone. The position is typically limited to a three-year term, after which a new candidate is chosen through community consensus.

Historically, mentions of alakjukat appear in Arinari annals dating from the archipelago’s early documented history. Some scholars interpret the practice as a mechanism to emphasize communal cohesion in a dispersed society; others view it as a ritualized governance structure that legitimizes authority through lineage-based service.
