Aktiivsöefiltratsioon, also known as activated carbon filtration, is a process that uses activated carbon to remove impurities from water and other liquids. Activated carbon is a form of carbon that has been processed to be highly porous, giving it a very large surface area. This large surface area allows it to adsorb, or attract and hold, various substances from the liquid passing through it.

The primary mechanism of activated carbon filtration is adsorption. The porous structure of activated carbon creates many tiny pores and crevices where contaminant molecules can become trapped. This process is effective at removing a wide range of organic compounds, chlorine, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and certain heavy metals. Activated carbon is commonly used in water purification systems, both for residential and industrial applications, to improve taste, odor, and clarity. It is also employed in air purification, gas separation, and in the production of pharmaceuticals and food. The effectiveness of the filter depends on the type of activated carbon used, the contact time with the fluid, and the nature and concentration of the contaminants. Over time, the pores of the activated carbon become saturated with impurities, and the filter will need to be replaced or regenerated to maintain its effectiveness.
