The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is a suspension bridge that spans the Akashi Strait, connecting Awaji Island with mainland Honshu, Japan. It is the longest central suspension span in the world. Construction began in 1986 and the bridge was opened to traffic on April 5, 1998. The bridge carries the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Route and is a crucial part of the transportation network in the region.

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge has a total length of 3,911 meters (12,831 feet). Its central span measures 1,991 meters (6,532 feet). The two main towers, reaching 298 meters (978 feet) above sea level, are among the tallest bridge towers in the world. The bridge's design had to account for the challenging environmental conditions of the Akashi Strait, including strong currents, frequent earthquakes, and typhoons. Advanced seismic isolation technology and wind-resistant design were incorporated to ensure its stability.

The bridge is part of the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway. It features six lanes of traffic, three in each direction. The construction project was a significant engineering feat, involving the meticulous planning and execution of complex procedures. The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is not only a vital piece of infrastructure but also a prominent landmark, often admired for its elegant design and impressive scale.
