Ainevahetustsüklid, often translated as metabolic cycles, are a series of biochemical reactions that occur within living organisms to maintain life. These cycles are fundamental to energy production, synthesis of essential molecules, and waste elimination. They involve the transformation of nutrients like carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into usable energy and building blocks for cellular processes.

Key metabolic cycles include the citric acid cycle (also known as the Krebs cycle), the electron transport chain, and glycolysis. Glycolysis breaks down glucose into pyruvate, releasing a small amount of ATP. Pyruvate then enters the mitochondria and is further processed through the citric acid cycle, generating more ATP and electron carriers. These carriers then fuel the electron transport chain, where the majority of ATP is produced through oxidative phosphorylation.
