Aikavyöhykeerot refers to the differences in local time across various geographical regions. These differences exist because the Earth rotates on its axis, and different parts of the planet are exposed to sunlight at different times. To standardize timekeeping and facilitate communication and travel, the world is divided into time zones.

The concept of time zones was largely adopted in the late 19th century, with Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in London initially serving as a global reference point. Most modern time zones are defined as offsets from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time. These offsets are typically in whole or half-hour increments.

The practical implications of time zone differences are numerous. Travelers must adjust their watches when crossing time zones, a process often referred to as combating jet lag. Businesses operating internationally must account for these differences when scheduling meetings or coordinating operations. Communication, whether via phone calls or emails, also requires awareness of the recipient's local time to avoid inconvenience. The International Date Line is a key element related to time zone differences, marking the place where one calendar day ends and the next begins. Crossing this line either adds or subtracts a day from the calendar, depending on the direction of travel.
