AfroNicaraguans
AfroNicaraguans are Nicaraguans of African descent. They primarily reside along the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, historically known as the Mosquito Coast. This region has a distinct cultural identity influenced by African, Indigenous, and European heritage. The AfroNicaraguan population is largely descended from enslaved Africans brought to the Americas and later from shipwrecked Africans and West Indian laborers who migrated to the region in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.
The primary language spoken by many AfroNicaraguans is an English-based creole language, known as Miskito Coast
Historically, the Mosquito Coast had a degree of autonomy, which contributed to the preservation of AfroNicaraguan
