Finnish adjectives can precede or follow the noun they modify, though pre-nominal placement is more common for descriptive adjectives. For example, "kaunis talo" (beautiful house) and "talo on kaunis" (the house is beautiful) both demonstrate correct adjective usage, with the first being an attributive use and the second a predicative use. The form of the adjective changes based on the grammatical case of the noun. If the noun is in the genitive case, the adjective will also be in the genitive. Similarly, if the noun is plural, the adjective will be plural.

Definiteness also plays a role. Definite adjectives have a distinct form, used when referring to specific, known entities. For instance, "se kaunis talo" (that beautiful house) uses the definite form of the adjective. Adjectives can also be compared, forming comparative and superlative degrees, much like in English. For example, "kaunis" (beautiful), "kauniimpi" (more beautiful), and "kaunein" (most beautiful).
