Adenylytes

Adenylytes are a group of molecules that are esters of adenosine monophosphate (AMP). AMP itself is a nucleotide composed of adenosine and one phosphate group. Adenylytes can also refer to the salts or esters of adenylic acid, which is another name for AMP. These molecules play crucial roles in biological processes.

The most well-known adenylyte is adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is often called the "energy currency" of the cell because it stores and releases energy through the hydrolysis of its phosphate bonds. Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) is another important adenylyte, formed when ATP loses one phosphate group. ADP can be re-phosphorylated to ATP, regenerating the energy supply.

Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) is a vital second messenger in cellular signaling pathways, mediating the effects of hormones and neurotransmitters.
