There is no universal definition of “natural” for additives; safety assessments and labeling requirements apply, with some jurisdictions permitting terms like “natural flavor” or “natural color” under specific criteria. In the United States, some natural additives may be evaluated under general safety standards or GRAS status; in the EU, authorities review intake and permissible uses.

Advantages of natural additives include consumer appeal and potentially simpler ingredient lists, while challenges involve supply variability, higher costs, stability concerns, and the need to avoid misleading claims.
