Structured data types, also known as composite or aggregate data types, are formed by combining primitive types. Examples include arrays (ordered collections of elements of the same type), strings (sequences of characters), records or structs (collections of named fields of potentially different types), and objects (instances of classes that encapsulate data and behavior).

The specific set of available data types can vary between programming languages. For instance, some languages might have distinct integer types for different sizes (e.g., byte, short, int, long), while others might offer a single integer type. The choice of data type can impact memory usage and performance. For example, using a smaller integer type when possible can save memory.

Data types also define the valid operations. You can perform arithmetic operations on numbers, but not on characters. Similarly, string concatenation is a valid operation for strings, but not for booleans. Incorrectly using data types can lead to errors, such as type mismatches or unexpected behavior during program execution.
