Acrisius was a king of Argos in ancient Greek mythology. He is best known for his role in the myth of Heracles (Hercules). Acrisius was the son of Proetus and Callirrhoe, and the father of the Nemean Lion, who was sent to kill Heracles as an infant. This was part of an oracle's prophecy that Heracles would one day kill his father. Acrisius, fearing for his life, locked Heracles in a cave and set two snakes to guard him. However, the snakes were killed by Heracles' nurse, who then took the infant to a friend in Tiryns.
