Abwässerbehandlungsanlagen, often referred to as Kläranlagen, are facilities designed to remove contaminants from wastewater before it is discharged into the environment. The primary goal is to protect public health and aquatic ecosystems. These plants typically handle domestic sewage, industrial wastewater, and sometimes stormwater runoff.

The treatment process usually involves several stages. The preliminary treatment removes large solids like grit and debris through screening and grit removal. Primary treatment then involves sedimentation, where heavier solids settle to the bottom as sludge, and lighter materials float to the surface. The clarified liquid then moves to secondary treatment, which employs biological processes. Microorganisms, such as bacteria, are used to break down dissolved organic matter. This is commonly achieved through activated sludge processes or trickling filters.

Following secondary treatment, tertiary treatment may be implemented to further purify the water. This stage can involve nutrient removal (nitrogen and phosphorus), disinfection (using UV radiation, chlorine, or ozone to kill remaining pathogens), and filtration to remove suspended solids. The treated wastewater, now called effluent, is then released into rivers, lakes, or oceans, or it may be reused for irrigation or industrial purposes. The removed sludge also undergoes treatment, often through digestion, dewatering, and disposal, or sometimes through composting or incineration.
