Absorbentti

Absorbentti is a term used to describe a material or substance that has the ability to take up and hold liquids or gases through absorption, adsorption, or a combination of both. The process of absorption involves the liquid or gas penetrating the bulk of the absorbent material, while adsorption refers to the molecules adhering to the surface of the material. The effectiveness of an absorbent depends on its physical and chemical properties, such as its porosity, surface area, and chemical affinity for the substance it is intended to absorb.

Common examples of absorbent materials include sponges, which are porous and can hold significant amounts of water; activated carbon, widely used for its high surface area and ability to adsorb various chemicals and odors; and silica gel, often found in small packets to absorb moisture and prevent spoilage of goods. In medical contexts, absorbent materials are crucial for wound dressings, surgical sponges, and incontinence products. Industrial applications range from oil spill cleanup using absorbent booms and pads to chemical processing where specific absorbents are used to remove impurities.
