ANGPTL8

ANGPTL8, also known as betatrophin or C1orf106, is a protein encoded by the ANGPTL8 gene in humans. It belongs to the angiopoietin family of proteins, which are involved in various biological processes including angiogenesis, inflammation, and metabolism. ANGPTL8 plays a significant role in regulating lipid metabolism and glucose homeostasis.

This protein is primarily expressed in the liver and adipose tissue. It acts as a secreted protein that interacts with other angiopoietin family members, particularly ANGPTL3 and ANGPTL4, to modulate the activity of lipoprotein lipase (LPL). LPL is a key enzyme responsible for hydrolyzing triglycerides in lipoproteins, thus facilitating the uptake of fatty acids by tissues. ANGPTL8 has been shown to enhance the inhibitory effect of ANGPTL3 on LPL activity, leading to increased circulating triglyceride levels.

In addition to its role in lipid metabolism, ANGPTL8 also influences glucose metabolism. Studies suggest that it can promote insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells and improve insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues.
