The process involves encoding the audio signal onto a carrier wave of a specific radio frequency. Early radio communication heavily relied on AM technology due to its simplicity in both transmission and reception. While AM broadcasting has largely been superseded by FM for high-fidelity audio due to FM's greater resistance to noise and interference, AM remains relevant for long-range communication, particularly in areas where FM reception is limited. AM transmitters are also used in other applications, including some shortwave radio services, amateur radio, and in certain types of aircraft communication. The design of AM transmitters typically involves a power amplifier that shapes the output signal according to the modulation input.
