The 5th Dynasty was a period in ancient Egyptian history that lasted from approximately 2494 to 2345 BC. It is considered part of the Old Kingdom, a time of significant pyramid construction and centralized power. The dynasty is known for its numerous sun temples, a shift in focus from the massive pyramids of the 4th Dynasty. These sun temples, often featuring a large obelisk-like benben stone, were dedicated to the sun god Ra.

Key rulers of the 5th Dynasty include Userkaf, the founder, who is credited with initiating the construction of sun temples. Sahure, his successor, also built a sun temple and is known for his naval expeditions, possibly to the Land of Punt. Neferirkare Kakai, Djedkare Isesi, and Unas are other prominent pharaohs of this era. Unas is particularly notable for being the first pharaoh to have the Pyramid Texts inscribed within his pyramid, providing invaluable insights into ancient Egyptian religious beliefs and funerary practices.

The administrative bureaucracy also saw further development during the 5th Dynasty, with the increasing importance of viziers and provincial governors. While pyramid construction continued, the scale of these structures generally decreased compared to the grand pyramids of Giza. The overall trend of the 5th Dynasty shows a continued flourishing of Egyptian civilization, with evolving religious practices and a robust administrative system, setting the stage for the subsequent First Intermediate Period.
