4-Hydroxyatomoxetine is a pharmacological compound that is the primary metabolite of atomoxetine, a medication primarily used for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The metabolic transformation of atomoxetine into 4-hydroxyatomoxetine occurs via the action of the enzyme CYP2D6, a member of the cytochrome P450 family of enzymes. This metabolic process involves the introduction of a hydroxyl group at the 4-position of the atomoxetine molecule, resulting in the formation of 4-hydroxyatomoxetine.

Studies have shown that 4-hydroxyatomoxetine retains a significant level of pharmacological activity that is similar to that of its parent compound, atomoxetine. In particular, 4-hydroxyatomoxetine has been shown to exhibit potent inhibitory effects on the norepinephrine transporter, a key molecular target of atomoxetine and other norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors.

The pharmacokinetic properties of 4-hydroxyatomoxetine have also been characterized in several studies.
