3-Propanethiol, also known as propyl mercaptan, is an organosulfur compound with the chemical formula CH3CH2CH2SH. It is a clear, colorless liquid with a strong, unpleasant odor characteristic of thiols. This odor is often described as resembling rotten eggs or garlic.

The compound is soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether, but it has limited solubility in water. 3-Propanethiol is flammable and can form explosive mixtures with air. Its boiling point is approximately 67-68 degrees Celsius.

3-Propanethiol is primarily used as an odorant for natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Because natural gas and LPG are naturally odorless, a small amount of a thiol like 3-propanethiol is added to make leaks detectable by smell, thus improving safety. It is also used in the synthesis of other organic chemicals and as a component in certain chemical reactions.

It is produced through the reaction of 1-propanol with hydrogen sulfide. Care must be taken when handling 3-propanethiol due to its flammability and strong odor. Exposure can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system.
