3-heptyne is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3CH2C≡CCH2CH2CH3. It is an alkyne, characterized by the presence of a carbon-carbon triple bond. Specifically, the triple bond is located between the third and fourth carbon atoms of a seven-carbon chain. This makes it an internal alkyne, as opposed to a terminal alkyne where the triple bond is at the end of the chain. 3-heptyne is a colorless liquid at room temperature.

For example, a vicinal dihalide such as 3,4-dibromoheptane can be treated with a strong base, like potassium hydroxide or sodium amide, to eliminate two molecules of hydrogen bromide and form the triple bond. Another method can involve the alkylation of smaller alkynes. It finds applications primarily in organic synthesis as a building block for more complex molecules.
