It was discovered on 17 September 2008 by the Catalina Sky Survey at the Mount Lemmon Station in Arizona, United States. The discovery designation displayed by the survey before its permanent numbering was 2008 FQ101. The asteroid was later assigned the official numerical designation 359674 by the Minor Planet Center as part of the sequence of numbered bodies.

The orbit of 359674 is well determined. It has a semi‑major axis of roughly 2.41 astronomical units, an eccentricity of about 0.12, and an inclination of approximately 4.1 degrees relative to the ecliptic. Its orbital period around the Sun is about 3.74 Earth years, completing each revolution between late March and mid‑April of the calendar year. The perihelion distance is a little less than 2.1 AU, while its aphelion reaches roughly 2.72 AU, placing it firmly within the inner portion of the main belt. The asteroid's mean anomaly at epoch is 252 degrees, and its longitude of the ascending node and argument of perihelion are 118 and 83 degrees, respectively.

Physical characteristics of 359674 are largely unknown because no spectra or light‑curve analysis has yet been published. Standard albedo assumptions for main‑belt asteroids suggest a diameter of between 3 and 9 kilometers, depending on its actual reflectivity.
