1,2-Dikloroetaani, also known as ethylene dichloride (EDC), is an organochlorine compound with the chemical formula C2H4Cl2. It is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor. Its primary use is as an intermediate in the production of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), which is then used to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic.

1,2-Dikloroetaani is synthesized industrially by the direct chlorination of ethylene or by oxychlorination of ethylene. The direct chlorination involves reacting ethylene with chlorine gas, typically in the presence of a catalyst. The oxychlorination process uses ethylene, hydrogen chloride, and oxygen.

The vast majority of 1,2-dikloroetaani produced is consumed captively by manufacturers for VCM production. A smaller amount is used as a solvent, particularly for resins and fats, and as a lead scavenger in antiknock gasoline additives, though this latter use has declined significantly. It has also been used in fumigants and as an intermediate in the synthesis of other organic chemicals.

Due to its toxicity and environmental concerns, the production and use of 1,2-dikloroetaani are regulated. It is considered a probable human carcinogen and can cause damage to the liver, kidneys, and nervous system upon exposure. Environmental release can contaminate soil and groundwater.
