It was first observed on 22 December 1999 by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) survey at the White Plains Observatory in New Mexico. The provisional designation 1999 XC12 was later assigned after its orbit was confirmed during follow‑up observations. The asteroid received its permanent number 115229 by the Minor Planet Center in 2005.

The orbit of 115229 is characterized by a semi‑major axis of 2.69 astronomical units, an eccentricity of 0.18, and a low inclination of 2.6° relative to the ecliptic plane. These values place it in the central region of the main belt. Its orbital period is approximately 4.40 Earth years, and it completes a full revolution around the Sun at an average velocity of roughly 18 km/s. The asteroid’s aphelion distance is 3.13 AU, while its perihelion is 2.25 AU.

Physical observations suggest that 115229 is a stony S‑type object, although a precise taxonomic classification has not been confirmed by spectroscopy. Photometric measurements indicate a rotation period of about 6.2 hours, and the lightcurve amplitude implies a moderately elongated shape. Estimates of its diameter, based on an assumed albedo of 0.20 and an absolute magnitude of 15.1, give a size of roughly 4.5 km. Because it has not yet been assigned a personal name, scientific literature commonly refers to it only by its numerical designation.
