Ürümqi, also known as Ürümqi or Wulumuqi, is a city located in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of northwest China. It serves as the regional capital and is situated in the Ürümqi District.

The city's name is derived from the Uighur word for "beautiful pasture." Ürümqi was founded in 1864 as a minor trading center, but it experienced significant growth during the 19th century with the arrival of the Russian and British railways companies. The city enjoyed strategic importance due to its control of the Dzungarian Gate, a key pass through the Tian Shan mountain range that connects central Asia with Gansu and Sichuan provinces.
