Öndunarvél, commonly known as an internal combustion engine in English, is a type of engine where the combustion of fuel occurs with an oxidizer (usually air) in a combustion chamber that is an integral part of the working fluid flow circuit. The expansion of the high-temperature and pressure gases produced by combustion applies direct force to some component of the engine, such as pistons or turbine blades, resulting in continuous motion.

The term "internal combustion" distinguishes this type of engine from external combustion engines, such as steam engines or Stirling engines, in which the heat source is located outside of the engine. Internal combustion engines are the most common type of power source for automobiles, motorcycles, aircraft, and many other machines.

The basic principle involves a cyclical process. In a common four-stroke engine, these cycles are intake, compression, power, and exhaust. During the intake stroke, a mixture of fuel and air is drawn into a cylinder. This mixture is then compressed in the compression stroke. In the power stroke, a spark ignites the compressed mixture, causing an explosion that pushes a piston down. Finally, in the exhaust stroke, the burnt gases are expelled from the cylinder. This continuous cycle generates mechanical energy that can be used to do work. Common fuels include gasoline, diesel, and natural gas.
