It refers to the act of food or liquid coming back up from the stomach into the esophagus, and then potentially being expelled from the mouth. This can occur shortly after a meal or at a later time.

The phenomenon is often associated with conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract. In infants, it is relatively common and often referred to as reflux. As the infant's digestive system matures, this usually subsides.
