Överlappningsfogar, translated as lap joints, are a common method of joining two pieces of material by overlapping them and fastening them together. This type of joint is utilized across various industries, including woodworking, metalworking, and construction. The basic principle involves one piece of material extending over the edge of another, creating a surface area for attachment.

The strength of an överlappningsfog comes from the direct contact and the method of fastening. Common fastening techniques include nails, screws, rivets, adhesives, or welding, depending on the materials being joined and the intended application. For instance, in woodworking, screws or glue are frequently used to create strong and durable lap joints. In metal fabrication, rivets or welding are more typical.

Överlappningsfogar offer several advantages. They are relatively simple to create, requiring minimal complex machining or specialized tools in many cases. They also provide a good sealing surface, which can be beneficial in applications where liquid or air tightness is important. The overlapping material can also add a degree of structural rigidity to the overall assembly. However, the thickness of the joint increases due to the overlap, which might be a consideration in designs where space is limited or a flush surface is required. The exposed edge of the top piece can also be a point of weakness if not properly protected or reinforced.
