Överhettningsskyddsventiler, often translated as overheat protection valves or temperature and pressure relief (T&P) valves, are safety devices designed to prevent the dangerous buildup of excessive temperature and pressure within systems such as water heaters, boilers, and solar thermal systems. Their primary function is to automatically release pressure and/or hot water when critical thresholds are exceeded, thereby averting catastrophic failures like explosions.

These valves typically incorporate a sensing element that reacts to elevated temperatures. In many designs, this element is a bimetallic strip or a wax-filled rod that expands with heat. When the temperature reaches a predetermined limit, usually around 90-100 degrees Celsius for domestic hot water systems, this expansion triggers a mechanism that opens the valve. Simultaneously, or in separate mechanisms, a pressure sensing component will open the valve if the internal pressure surpasses a safe operating limit, often around 6-10 bar.

The released hot water or steam then escapes through a discharge pipe, directed to a safe location like a floor drain or outside the building, where it can dissipate safely.
