Äännemuutokset, or sound changes, are alterations in the pronunciation of sounds in a language over time. These changes are a fundamental aspect of language evolution and are responsible for the diversity of languages spoken today. Sound changes can be categorized in various ways, but common types include assimilation, dissimilation, deletion, insertion, and metathesis.

Assimilation occurs when a sound becomes more like a neighboring sound. For instance, in English, the "n" in "ten pounds" often becomes "m" before the "p" sound, resulting in "tem pounds." Dissimilation is the opposite, where a sound becomes less like a neighboring sound. Deletion, also known as elision, is the dropping of a sound, such as the "t" in "often." Insertion, or epenthesis, is the addition of a sound, like the "p" sometimes added in "length" to make it "lengths." Metathesis involves the transposition of sounds, as seen in the historical change of "bird" from the older form "bridd."

Sound changes can be regular, affecting all instances of a particular sound in a specific environment, or irregular, occurring sporadically. They can also be conditioned by their phonetic environment or be unconditioned, happening regardless of surrounding sounds. The study of sound changes is crucial for historical linguistics, allowing scholars to reconstruct proto-languages and trace the relationships between different languages. Understanding these transformations provides insight into how languages adapt and diverge.
