Äänihuulien

Äänihuulien, also known as vocal cords or vocal folds, are a pair of muscular folds located within the larynx (voice box) in the throat. These structures play a crucial role in producing sound for speech, singing, and other vocalizations. When air is expelled from the lungs, it passes through the glottis, the opening between the vocal folds. The vibrations of the vocal folds, caused by the airflow, create the fundamental sound waves.

The tension and position of the vocal folds can be adjusted to alter the pitch and loudness of the voice. Tighter and shorter folds produce higher pitches, while looser and longer folds produce lower pitches. The intrinsic muscles of the larynx control these adjustments. The quality of the voice is also influenced by the shape and movement of the vocal folds, as well as resonance within the vocal tract.

Disorders affecting the vocal folds, such as nodules, polyps, or paralysis, can lead to voice problems like hoarseness, breathiness, or complete voice loss. Medical professionals like otolaryngologists (ENT doctors) and speech-language pathologists are involved in diagnosing and treating these conditions. Maintaining vocal health involves proper hydration, avoiding overuse, and refraining from shouting or whispering excessively.
