Üvegkerámiák, also known as glass-ceramics, are a class of advanced materials that combine properties of both glass and ceramics. They are produced by controlled crystallization of a base glass. The process typically involves melting the glass components, shaping the molten material, and then subjecting it to a specific heat treatment. This heat treatment, known as ceramization, induces the formation of fine, uniformly dispersed crystalline phases within the amorphous glass matrix.

The resulting microstructure, consisting of tiny crystallites embedded in a glassy phase, gives glass-ceramics their unique properties. These properties can be tailored by adjusting the glass composition and the ceramization process. Common advantages include high strength, excellent thermal shock resistance, low thermal expansion, good electrical insulation, and chemical durability. Some glass-ceramics also exhibit unique optical properties, such as transparency or opaqueness, and can be engineered to have specific dielectric constants or magnetic behaviors.

Glass-ceramics find applications in a wide range of fields. In the kitchen, they are used for cooktops and cookware due to their resistance to high temperatures and rapid temperature changes. In astronomy, their low thermal expansion makes them ideal for telescope mirrors. They are also employed in architectural glazing, for specialized electronic components, in medical implants, and in industrial applications requiring robust and stable materials. The ability to fine-tune their properties makes them versatile engineering materials.
