Üksikkõlaks is an Estonian term that translates to "single-cell organism" in English. This refers to any organism that consists of only one cell. Despite their simplicity, single-cell organisms are incredibly diverse and can be found in almost every environment on Earth, from the deepest oceans to the hottest deserts.

These organisms perform all essential life functions within that single cell, including metabolism, reproduction, and response to stimuli. They can be prokaryotic, meaning their cells lack a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles (like bacteria and archaea), or eukaryotic, possessing a nucleus and other specialized structures within their cell (like protozoa and some algae).

Single-cell organisms play crucial roles in ecosystems. For instance, phytoplankton, a type of single-cell algae, are primary producers in aquatic environments, forming the base of many food webs and producing a significant portion of the Earth's oxygen. Other single-cell organisms are essential decomposers, breaking down dead organic matter and recycling nutrients. While some are free-living, others exist as parasites or symbionts, interacting with other organisms. The study of üksikkõlaks provides fundamental insights into the origins of life and the basic principles of biology.
